THE BALANCE OF POWER

Every seat needs a source.

Current Congress and 2026 results

Current Congress shows recorded official membership of the 119th Congress. It is not an election forecast or a list of 2026 winners. Each dot represents one voting seat; the layout is symbolic. Independents remain separate from Democrats and Republicans.

When an election seat changes color

A seat changes only after a reviewed election authority explicitly declares a winner or verified certification identifies that winner. The record must match the election, race, party and preserved source snapshot. A large lead, a concession, a media call or “100% precincts reporting” alone does not qualify. A declared winner can still be uncertified. Disputed, withdrawn or recount-pending records remain unresolved.

Reaching a majority

218 is a majority of the full 435-seat House. 51 is an outright majority of the 100-seat Senate. A 50–50 Senate depends on caucus alignment and the vice president’s tie-breaking role. We do not automatically assign independents to a party or announce organizational control.

Refresh and coverage

This preview uses recorded official rosters. November winner feeds are not connected. The API version can check for reviewed updates every 60 seconds while the page is visible; a check is not a promise that an authority publishes that often. Senate election totals include 65 seats not up in 2026, shown in pale colors. Missing House outcomes stay unresolved. A failed refresh retains the previous dated report and shows a warning.

OUR REPORTING STANDARD

Know what a number means.

Official sources and certification

Election counts come from state and county election authorities, not media estimates, network race calls, or our own projections. An official publisher can issue preliminary data. We display “Certified” only when certification evidence has been verified for the exact election and preserved snapshot, with the certifying authority, official reference, certification date and review date recorded. Current November turnout reports are preliminary; certification of the March archive has not been verified. File hashes and independent source matches do not certify results.

What the race map shows

The homepage starts with Congress on every visit. The catalog includes 435 voting House seats and 35 Senate contests, including the Florida and Ohio special elections. The Priority seats only checkbox filters and highlights the editable homepage watchlist; these selections are not forecasts or party labels. My races is saved locally when your browser permits it. The country outline and state shapes use 2025 Census cartographic boundaries, with Alaska and Hawaii insets. Congressional district boundaries and candidate results are not drawn.

Coverage comes first

This first implementation connects North Carolina early and mail voting. All 50 states and DC appear in the readiness register. A listed source is not a connected feed. There is no national turnout estimate.

Three different clocks

“File updated” is the publisher’s HTTP Last-Modified timestamp. “Last checked” records our successful fetch. A reporting cutoff is shown only when explicitly supplied by the publisher; it is not inferred from a download time. NC’s daily files generally include the prior day’s activity.

Verification has levels

Hashes check file integrity. Summing county files against a state file checks internal consistency. Independent confirmation requires separately maintained official sources with the same election, geography, measure and declared cutoff. The current data has no independent confirmation.

Results need their own context

November general-election precinct results are not connected yet. The March primary archive demonstrates the results pipeline. Administrative reporting units stay labeled; they are not silently reassigned to residential precincts. Candidate votes are never summed into a turnout measure. We do not project winners or infer fraud.

Preserving the record

The local implementation stores content-addressed raw files, parsed records and receipts. This protects against accidental replacement in the application. Production deployment includes S3 Object Lock compliance retention for stronger, version-specific immutability. Local hashes alone do not provide that protection.
